Too Little, Too Late

A picture is worth a thousand words. Look closely:

I don't know who Georgia Retos is, but if the crowd on the right is in Peabody, Massachusetts, President Bush's call to put the National Guard on the border (left) is far too late.*

* the "Peabody" picture is a mistake from the Fox News web team. It actually belongs to the Brazilian gang story (bottom left).

I didn't go to Fox News' story, but the Peabody rescue story is probably in connection to the flooding up here. We aren't quite up to New Orleans standards, but some places around New England have received almost a foot and a half of rain since Friday night -- and it ain't even gonna slow down before Wednesday.

I tell ya, if every illegal alien filled a sandbag while hiking across the desert and brought it up here, I'd reconsider my position on amnesty...

On the issue of illegal immigration, I'm sure I will not be disappointed tonight by President Bush's speech (with low expectations it's hard to be disappointed). No matter what he proposes - it will be too little too late. Unless I hear of reforms that enable employers to positively verify citizenship of potential employees and increased enforcement of laws prohibiting employers from employing illegals coupled with the withholding of social programs from non-citizens, then everything else will be appeasement. Placing troops on the border may stem the present unabated flow, but will do nothing to force a repatriation of those illegals already in the US. With no apologies, I do not want any kind of program that will facilitate easily obtaining guest worker status or worse yet citizenship for illegal immigrants. Let them go back home and make proper application to enter this country. Short of that; start building more prisons for the law breakers.

Quite frankly, I believe we should emulate Mexico’s immigration laws and border control policies. Look them up some time; they hardly represent what Fox and friends (Vicente, not the FNC variety) expect of the US of A in dealing with Mexicans that suddenly feel an urge to illegally migrate north.

With all the good that President Bush has done in the area of national security and fighting the war against radical Islamic terrorism, stimulating the economy through tax cuts, attempting to fix Social Security, and others, illegal immigration and big government spending are two issues that will not reflect kindly upon his administration. That’s too bad – world events had postured him to be a truly great president.
