Keeping the Peace?
When Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora praised Hezbollah's war against Israel as "legendary" it was disconcerting. When his government refused to disarm Hezbollah, and instead opted for a "if we don't see it, we won't confiscate it (so please hide them)" approach to Hezbollah's weaponry, it was cause for concern.
So what should we make of the Lebanese Army moving anti-aircraft guns into southern Lebanon?
My guess is "nothing good."
So what should we make of the Lebanese Army moving anti-aircraft guns into southern Lebanon?
Abbracadaabra, presto changeo. Hizb AA transforms itself into Lebanese AA.
Posted by: Purple Avenger at September 5, 2006 04:22 PMIt isn't that bad. This way, the next time there's any attack from Lebanon, and anti-aircraft military missiles are used, then the war will atleast be against Lebanon as a whole and not against Hezb'Allah.
We've been fighting Hezb'Allah and those groups in Lebanon for two generations. It will never end unless Lebanon takes responsibility for their attacks. But no one ever forces Lebanon to do so. That was the whole point of 2000's withdrawal, by the way, Barak specificaly said that from now on the Lebanese government will be accountable. It was also the reason for the Israeli restrain at the kidnaping of 2000, the attempt to kidnap at 2005, and the Katyushas every once in a while. We were waiting for the Lebanese government to derive enough force to throw Hezb'Allah out like it did the rest of the Syrian forces.
The kidnappings became an epidemic in Israel, I can count 3 attempts from INSIDE ISRAEL the last years, and I'm talking civilians here, and two successes: one of a cab driver from Jerusalem, who got rescued by comando forces, and one of Eliyahu Asheri who was murdered cold blooded right after he was kidnapped, but was negotiated for as if alive, also civilian (teenager) and also from Jerusalem. That's why we could not afford motivate this contest between Iranian supported movements who gets to break Hezb'Allah's record of kidnappings, set in 2000, any more.
This is the reason this time there was a response, but the priniple set by Barak, that Lebanon is accountable (1559) was broken. Once again, Lebanon got away with it. It was only Hezb'allah we fought. Because the US demanded we don't weaken this anti Syria government. May be they were right, I can't tell, but this way, as you can see, it is all very comfy and convenient. They can go on like this for ever.
Their border can be used to kill Jews, and Israeli soldiers will risk their lives going in just so that the civilians Lebanon had abandoned to the mercy of Hezb'Allah to be used as canon fodder, won't get hurt in an air strike, and Israeli civilians will not see the the end of the rocket attacks because the warnings of civilians to flee the inhabitant zones give Hezb'Allah the ability to move those rockets around saving them from bombardments, but Lebanon will be the innocent victim, attacked by Israel. I ask you: why the hell should Senyora take responsibility? The whole world is on his side, sending money, treating him as a saint. This is two in the price of one for him: when ever Hezb'Allah gets out of controll, he doesn't just make Lebanon's lives hard, but attacks Israel. And so when ever that happens he can count on Israel to come in and make south Beirut available for Lebanese again. He should never so much as raise a finger to do anything about Hezb'Allah.
The side bonus is Israel gets to be smeared. Do not underestimate that! The Lebanese Christian and Druse politicians were never as accepted as Arabs as when they had their chanse for their round of Israel slander. He earned both the compassionate western world and the Arab world just by letting Hezb'allah use his soil and population to kill Jews. And furthermore, Israel is asked by US to compensate Lebanon as well. God forbid that any body compensates us for the costs of renovation thousends of houses (5000, I think the number is), costs of the evacuation of population, economic cost of 1/3 of Israel shut down for a month, and god damnet the loss of lives of soldiers who paid with their lives for the Lebanese government's criminal permition to Hezb'Allah to build his military constructions from ammunition storages all the way to the headquarters in/above/beneath residence.
So why the hell should Senyora stop it??? why??? what's in it for him? It is a good thing that the Lebanese army makes its ammunition available for Hezb'Allah and that it takes part in the fighting. This way the next war will not be against Hezb'Allah, who are dressed civilian, ans who are suddenly counted as civilians the minute they die. It will be against Lebanon. Lebanon will finally be acountable. Lebanon will finally have some interest to put an end to it.
And let me tell you: It is much easyer for the Israeli pilot to overcome their anti aircraft weapons, than to overcome the enormous difficulty of having to engage in a war from within civilians. Or god forbid, to feer of the day he might be the one launching the missile at a Katyusha launcher to find out the next morning bodies of civilians beeing dug out from the building the launcher was at.
Posted by: an Israeli at September 5, 2006 07:54 PMAAA is popular in Arab nations because the shells and shrapnel tend to come down among civilians. Makes for award-winning photos, and you can blame anything that comes from the sky on the Western powers.
Posted by: Robert Crawford at September 5, 2006 08:06 PMYou invest heavily in AA when you're prone to doing dumb shit that might cause someone to retaliate someday.
You don't see Hatians investing in this kind of stuff. The don't do anything that might provoke anyone to try and bomb the crap out of them.
