More Than a Rope and a Tree
If you are going to call someone a liar over a lynching claim, make sure you understand the definition of the term first.
If you don't, you deserve the scorn you get.
From your definition link:
"... setting the size of the mob at no fewer than five"
From your liar link (wich I think is a wortwhile article):
"As Hall alighted from the car at the courthouse square, the three petitioners began beating him ..."
Granted that the spirit of the crime satisfies "... the killers had to act under pretext of service to justice, their race or tradition;" still, three is less than five.
BTW, good work on the nonvasion.

What is wrong with you?
In the current climate your inane hair-splitting will help not at all. In most peoples' minds it's a distinction without a difference. What, exactly, do you think people are going to say upon reading what you wrote?
"OHH!! Wellllll! Noooooo PROBLEM! Only THREE!! Hey, coulda happened to anybody. Coulda tripped on an ant, and died just the same."
Do us all a favor, and don't say anything else anywhere, OK?
Posted by: Bill Smith at July 26, 2010 07:10 PMI thought much the same. I thought it was shameful.
Posted by: Douglas at July 26, 2010 09:51 PMGiven the common usage of the term, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that someone would consider the racially motivated killing of a person who was beset and outnumbered to be a lynching, even if does not meet the criteria of either Jeffrey Lord or USLegal.com.
There is no indication that Shirley Sherrod was intending to deceived anyone with her story.
It is one thing to disagree with her motivation, political views, understanding of race relations, or whatever. It is another just to try to find a reason to attack her personally.
Posted by: Sol at July 27, 2010 03:30 PMWhile I disagree with you pretty much all of the time, I think I keep coming back because every so often you reassure me that you're not *totally* nuts. Thanks for this, and the recent posts about the "Mexican invasion."
I would think that a reasonable person (which evidently excludes Jeffrey Lord) would have a "know it when I see it" definition of lynching; a never-prosecuted extrajudicial death by bludgeoning of a black man by white men in the Jim Crow South pretty easily qualifies.
