Sign the NRSC Pledge

Hugh Hewitt started the idea, N.Z. Bear whipped it into shape, Dean Barnett provided the FAQ and here it is, with over 12,000 signatories so far in the first full day.

What's it all about? It's simple, really:

If the United States Senate passes a resolution, non-binding or otherwise, that criticizes the commitment of additional troops to Iraq that General Petraeus has asked for and that the president has pledged, and if the Senate does so after the testimony of General Petraeus on January 23 that such a resolution will be an encouragement to the enemy, I will not contribute to any Republican senator who voted for the resolution. Further, if any Republican senator who votes for such a resolution is a candidate for re-election in 2008, I will not contribute to the National Republican Senatorial Committee unless the Chairman of that Committee, Senator Ensign, commits in writing that none of the funds of the NRSC will go to support the re-election of any senator supporting the non-binding resolution.

What did I think of it? Of more than 12,000 signatories, I'm #7. What are you waiting for; McCain to grow a spine?

I MUST AGREE, we elect these people. If they don't do what we want, don't give them a fucking dime.

I doubt the GOP senators who oppose the surge are quaking in their shoes about p***ing you all off. The 12,000 of you who have signed up probably account for nothing more than a negligible percentage of their campaign funds. And you add up to even less of their vote counts. This is destined to be just yet one more time where the blogosphere ends up with egg on its face after overestimating its power and pull. But if it makes you feel good, go ahead.

While Petraeus is no doubt sincere that such a resolution would give encouragement to our enemies, so what? I question just how much attention the insurgents pay to the intramural politics here in Washington as opposed to the attention they pay to how many of them are getting killed by our military... yeah, I figure the insurgents are all reading the NYT and getting all encouraged... all the while, their units get chewed up everytime they face off against our military.

As for me, I don't give cash to politicians. But since I'm opposed to a surge, perhaps I should start giving to those who disappoint you?

It's your nickle, give it to whomever you want. Remember though, EVERYTHING that happens starts with ONE PERSON saying something to another. Personally, I don't see the surge as changing the situation much. 160,000 of us---26,000,000 of them.
